Teacher Feature

One of this year’s Earthwatch Woodside TeachLive expedition members is Damon Angelatos from Geraldton fielding on Team 1. Damon is the Head of Science at Geraldton Grammar School and in addition to teaching his upper school subjects of Biology and Chemistry, has a passion for science students learning more about themselves and their natural world around them.
Damon was attracted to Geraldton by its fascinating natural environment and loves to share his interest in this part of the world with his students. He is a firm believer in ensuring that students have real experience to base their learning on and regularly makes use of local geography including the coastal strip and the inland ranges to ensure this happens. Additionally, the development of Geraldton Grammar School’s ‘Eco Lake’, a wetland sanctuary constructed to make use of waste stormwater from local retail industry, has allowed his students to explore the role of habitat development on the management of native species.
Where direct experience is unavailable, Damon is a keen user of technology to bring the world to his students. This is one of the features that made him particularly keen on the Earthwatch Woodside TeachLive expedition. The opportunity to use technology to both assist in the whale shark research and interact with his students back at Geraldton Grammar School has been an exciting part of his role within the expedition group.
Damon is looking forward to taking back to his Science Department at Geraldton Grammar School the many things he has learnt about environmental education on this expedition.
