Hedland Senior High

Richard Furber – Hedland Senior High

Hedland Senior High School is located 1700km north of Perth in the community of South Hedland. The school serves the student population of both Port and South Hedland in the booming Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The school provides a supportive learning environment for approximately 720 students and the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and understandings to function effectively in society and achieve their individual potential.

Set amongst well-established trees and gardens in South Hedland, about 15 kilometres inland from the port, Hedland Senior High School’s multicultural population is reflected in the colourful murals that decorate its walls, courtesy of the Strong Visual Arts Program. The school also has the only regional specialist arts program.

Hedland Senior High offers a broad range of courses from Year 8 through to Year 12. There is a focus on developing appropriate Post-Compulsory options and the school has established strong links with the Pilbara College of TAFE, local business and industry.

Individual needs are well catered for with a wide range of support programs in the areas of Education Support, Talented and Gifted, Aboriginal Education, Physical Education and Pastoral Care. Programs are currently being expanded with the implementation of the Pilbara Education Partnership.

Staff, parents, students, industry and the wider community work together to achieve the school’s vision of establishing a safe, modern educational institution that values cultural difference, promotes excellence in learning and empowers students to contribute positively in a world of constant change.
