Teacher Feature

Louise Hutchings

Louise commenced her teaching career in 2006 at Margaret River Senor High School and has since then travelled to Europe and New Zealand teaching overseas. Louise has learnt the value of sustainability and active citizenship within her cohorts in order to conserve the environment of Australia and the world. Using her own interests in environmental sciences to best model to her students’ purposeful learning tasks involving their future.

Margaret River has provided an ideal background for Louise to involve her students in environmental and sustainability studies. Having a local coastal area and marine environment impacted due to human activities both recreational activities and coastal development provides a real life scenario for her students. How to best balance this idyllic lifestyle along with the advantages given by the environment of the area is a challenge for all, including her students.

Louise has actively sought to extend her own understandings and skills in these areas and as such has undertaken the Woodside TeachLive project to allow her students to experience the successful eco tourism industry project undertaken in Exmouth to monitor the Whale Sharks of Ningaloo. Using the best of technology available allowing her classes to be part of the learning with her in real time. The students being able to take the lesson learnt into their own situation presented at Margaret River.

This very forward thinking of Louise will provide her students with a very unique opportunity afforded to few and pass on the knowledge of sustainability in order to preserve this vital environment for future generations.
