Prior to attending this lesson the students will have started filling in a TWLH chart. This will be an on going task for the duration of the programme. Teachers at Currambine Primary School have been given a programme of 10 lessons and a resource pack. Lesson One aims to familiarise the students with the websites and explain the research project that I will be participating in. The students will also be given a format for their own research projects.

Lesson One - Engage

Learning Area: Science – Life & Living

Years 4-7

Teachers from these grades have been given a copy of my programme and a resource pack.

Hi Currambine Primary School!

When you are reading this I want you to think of me enjoying the warmth of sunny Exmouth, cruising around in a boat in the Ningaloo Marine Park and hopefully…seeing many whale sharks!!

Your task for today (with many thanks to Mrs Morris and Mr Lambe) is to have a look at the websites.

Have a look at the Ecocean website. www.ecocean.org

I would like you to have a look at the left hand column and enter the Photo-identification library.

Click on videos and watch the two short clips (whoa! Give them time to load!).

I would like you to watch the YouTube video and the volunteers video (so you can see what great things I’m doing!).

You have already started filling in the “What I think I know” section of your TWLH chart. Now add on any new facts that you have learnt about whale sharks.

When you return to your homeroom your classroom teacher will talk to you about using the internet to locate information on whale sharks. You will be writing a report on whale sharks and will have to answer two focus questions.

  1. Is the whale shark a shark or whale?
  2. What can be done to protect whale sharks and why is this important?

Think about the other types of information you will need to include in your report and use the report checklist. Plan how you will present your report, be as creative as you like!

Remember you can send me questions whilst I am in Exmouth, either Mr Lambe or Mrs Morris will show you how to do this.

Good luck with your mission!
