Lesson One

Website Orientation

Welcome to your Whale sharks of Ningaloo Reef web experience!

By successfully reaching here you have accessed the home page of the TeachLive project where you can access your lessons.

The web address for our project is http://whalesharks.teachlive.org.au

Please follow each lesson in sequence and complete all tasks. The lessons are designed to be completed independently but if you need help or direction do not hesitate to ask your teacher.

Let’s start!

· The Homepage will give you a brief outline of the Whale shark project at Ningaloo Marine Park (NMP). Read through to get a better understanding.

· Down the left-hand side of the homepage you will find links to other important areas of the website. These are- About TeachLive, About Earthwatch, The Teachers, About Brad Norman, About Ningaloo Reef, About Exmouth, Forum, Contact Us and Photo Gallery.

· Read through each of these to familiarise yourself.

· When you click on Teachers it will give you the schools participating and also the lessons to be completed.

· Forums is the area that you can directly contact “The Team”. We have four teachers participating; on each day two are in the water collecting data and two will be processing that data back at the “Lab”. I will be able to answer your questions or provide further information if you need it. Simply click on Exmouth District High and either respond to topic or click on new topic at the top. Type in your subject, then in the message box type your question or query. When you have finished go to the bottom and click the Send for publishing button. Keep checking this area for replies.

Your Task:

Create a table in Word that you can record information in on the weather. You can get specific information on weather conditions at Exmouth from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) at http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDW60701/IDW60701.94302.shtml

You will need 8 columns and 10 rows.

Record the weather conditions and sightings for 9am and 2pm for each day Monday 14th to Friday18th.

Your columns headings should be: Date, Time, Temp, Wind Speed, Air Pressure, Weather, Cloud and Sightings.
