Karratha Senior High
The Karratha Senior High School motto 'Towards Tomorrow' embraces the aims of enhancing responsible and caring individuals prepared for success in a changing world. There are approximately 60 teaching staff and 30 non-teaching staff.
The school attracts Year 8 students from all six primary schools within the Karratha town site: Pegs Creek, Tambrey, Karratha, Millar's Well, Karratha Educational Support Centre and Saint Paul's. Students also come from primary schools in the neighbouring towns of Dampier, Roebourne and Wickham.
Karratha Senior High School has outstanding success with its Vocational Education and Training programs, Aboriginal students and student retention rates into upper school. Aboriginal students make up 12.5 percent of the student population. Karratha Senior High School currently has a Year 10 -11 student retention rate of 102 percent (the school attracts students from the private sector and new families moving into town). In 1996, the number of students involved in VET related courses was 16, in 2005 there were over 140 students involved. The VET programs are so successful that students often gain employment before completing Year 12. The school offers a comprehensive range of tertiary entrance based subjects. Between 30-50 percent of the school's Year 12 students undertake a tertiary entrance program of study.
The school's goal is to provide programs for students in both middle and senior school environments, such as the Inclusive Learning Unit, which provides a base for Education Support and academic extension through the Department of Education and Training's Academic Talent Program. A partnership with local business and the Polly Farmer Foundation provides support for achieving Aboriginal students through the Gumula Mirnuwarni Aboriginal Education Project.
Karratha Senior High School students have access to the town's Recreation Centre, netball courts, tennis courts and football oval. These facilities are located within a two-minute walk from the school.
